Italian Vogue October

Shot in NY at one of my favorite locations of all times, this summer shoot and film was styled by Giulio Martinelli, makeup Francelle, hair by Frederico Ghezzi. The set design was done by my old friend Loren Crawford who was so dedicated he stayed ON SITE!! Neil Fenton generously provided the awesome International Scout vehicle. Dtouch did all the color grading and retouching.

Casting by Noah Shelly at AM casting: Marike at Wilhelmina, Lydia at Ford, Harrieth at Women, Luisa at DNA, Alyona at Marilyn, Ilona at Trump, and Hanaa at IMG who is one of my current favorites.

Shot 2 stories in Shanghai this past summer, one was shot in a historical area from the 1930s in nearly 100 degree weather with Cheryl Leung styling, and Alexander Chow art directing.

Here is a couple of pages of a shoot I did for the Sept issue of Elle with Kate. Harrieth overcame her fear of wild animals in Arizona to create this powerful character for us! We began the shoot in the red cliffs surrounding the gorgeous Enchantment's resort in Sedona. This place is absolute MAGIC, and has a vortex on the property. Anyone who has ever seen the film "The Picnic at Hanging Rock" knows what a vortex is, but this one was healing, and refreshed our every move. The we went to a cool private African zoo to shoot the rest. I was licked by a blind giraffe. Purple tongue, very strange.

Francelle and I shot this with Delphine who came straight off a Meisel shoot to be covered head to toe in paint. In the process our lights melted the electrics in the studio, and the firemen came! The young angry kids from VICE (the office next door), wrapped in irony, poured into the streets smoking cigarettes. Chaos ensued but the boys at Fast Ashley's were cool as cucumbers. They re-rigged our lights to the next building. With threat of being shut down any moment, and the last coolness from the air conditioning disappearing, Delphine started to drip with sweat, which only added to the darkness of the last scene.

For my first contribution to BON I shot with Polina Aranova, and model Jana K (who I have been working with for years). Shane Klein found the perfect couch, and Fast Ashley's hooked us up with a great studio. Rie worked her magic with the makeup, and Andre perfected the hair. Love love!!

In LA we found this amazing restaurant that put us in the Asia that only Hollywood can create. My old friend and amazing stylist, Shun Watanabe was the man who brought Tara's character together.

"Bowie eats China set in the future that was interpreted in a 1970s mobster film."

Rie brought her lifelong obsession with Bowie to the next level and was a COMPLETE asset -- packed old books, and understood nuances of his personas, then made it her own. Tony made us laugh all day and maintained that perfect coif. Evan + his team created the "rising sun set" while hauling around faux neon lights, and Sloan and Jimmy Gamboa, kept us fed and on time.

My new Elle story has just come out. Kate Lamphear styled this Kim Bassinger / Scarface inspired romp in Miami. We shot it in December during ART Basel where I officially waited in the longest party line ever (forget fashion week Paris!!) But Kate's connects breezed us in and synchronized swimming and free drinks followed. Then we got back to work... Bok Hee and Rie Omoto helped transform these girls into powerfully bored mavens wondering around this newly built white marble palace in coral gables. The way we should all live for at least one weekend per year-- don't forget the decadence!

On a cold late November on the roof of Milk Studios in NY, I met Andy Samberg in short shorts. No surprise he was hysterical and a joy to work with. The models Juana @ NY, Martha + Ruby @ Next, and Kristy @ Women helped make our 9 page story lots of fun too. Melissa Ventosa Martin styled, and David Von Cannon did the hair, and Kristin Gallegos did the makeup. Shane Klein hooked up the foliage.

Opening Ceremony has decided to make the blue lenses after art director Jenny Mannerheim tinted them on their cover. We shot at her place in LA. Styling by Sarah Moonves, makeup by Nellie Kim, and hair by Michael Long.

COVER of Men's Chinese Vogue FALL 2010

Shot the cover of Men's Chinese Vogue in China with Chen Kun in a mining district about 4 hours outside of Beijing. Vicson Guevara art directed, Grant Pearce styling, retouching by Dtouch.

I wasn't familiar with Chen Kun when I got booked for the job, but it was quite an interesting study of fame. Of course to everyone I was with he was a HUGE MEGA star, but to me he was a thoughtful, playful guy who was looking to make some images that were a new take on his personality. We chose 'Blade Runner' meets Rick Owens.

One of the other main excitements for me was we got to work with the biggest pyrotechnic expert in China. He has worked with Zhang Yimou who is one of my heros of cinema. One step away from Zhang Yimou!!! That's what I thought every time he set off a smoke bomb.

Also, the location was deceiving-- a mini Arizona. The rocks were never more than 30 feet, an old dried up lake. The ride there through the night was harrowing. More speeding tractor trailers than I have ever seen. On the way back we got stuck in miles of these trucks being weighed, and I thought a very capitalistic thought, "All this product being delayed for the shops just wasn't right!" The poor drivers must've been exhausted, and so was I-- delayed 3 extra hours with no bathroom... The highway is no place for a lady (not even THIS lady).

At the end of the shoot, Chen Kun told me I had done something no one had ever done for him (I know what you are thinking, but no...) He meant I had created a new character in his repertoire -- the HERO. I literally got a tear in my eye as he held my hands appreciatively. Changing lives one shoot at a time!!

OCTOBER Chinese Vogue

This summer on a burning hot roof in Beijing, Yi Guo and I shot an 8 page suiting story for Chinese Vogue with the beautiful Ming. My heel fell off of my boot it was so hot!! But Ming looks as cool as a cucumber.

Went to Paris to direct a film for The Row during fashion week. It was screened at their presentation the following day (after an all night edit). Talk about immediate satisfaction! My husband Sloan worked on the presentation too, so it was a family affair (some pictures to come).

NOWNESS film with Aaron DeMey and Eniko launched

My film with Aaron DeMey and Eniko launched on Nowness.com August 26th. We shot it on long island in July, and it's was an amazing, sunny hot day (after torrential downpours caused it to be rescheduled 2 days before). See the full film. Aaron and Eniko were absolute dreams to work with, and to see it all come together with music by Outpost 13 and gorgeous color by Dtouch, brought a little tear. Check out the quote at the end by Anne Carson.
